DETAILS ON THE PLAYS

Lights Out
a play exploring an imaginary post-electricity era when the doom has already struck, and where the audience becomes an unsuspecting part
Gandi Baat
a play on the wastage of water in the city and how raising a voice about it leads to trouble
Presented by the Theatre Fellows of the Create to Inspire Fellowship

Andhar Nogori Choupot Raja
a play in Bengali and English based on the Hindi play by Bhartendu Harishchandra and A. K. Ramanujan’s translation of a folk tale
“Once upon a time in the Kingdom of Foolishness the king and the minister were both idiots…”
A guru and his chelas travel to such a kingdom where the king and minister have decreed that day is night and night is day, and where everything in the bazaar is priced at one rupee. One of the chelas – tempted by the promise of a cheap and easy lifestyle – decides to stay on despite his guru’s advice.
Meanwhile, an old woman’s goat grazing near the wall of a merchant’s house is killed when the wall collapses. The king promises her justice, but just cannot seem to find the right culprit as a complicated blame game ensues.
Circumstances zero in on the hapless chela as an ideal candidate for hanging. What can the guru do to save his chela from this ludicrous situation?
A fresh translation by Sugata Hazra, original lyrics with live music, and lively choreography create a refreshing, wryly humorous and colourful production that appeals to children and adults alike.
Direction:
Vandana Alase Hazra
Amlan Chudhuri
